1. Thinking Day Banner Design Competition!- Each guide to submit an individual banner proposal by Monday, 18/1/10, by 7.15am. You can find me in 4J classroom. - Proposals have to be fully outlined and coloured. (I won't reiterate this point again, it should be understood for all proposals)- Banners should include the images of 5 Girl Guide/Girl Scout members (including Brownies) in uniform, from the 5 Regions of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (Africa, Arab, Asia Pacific, Europe and Western Hemisphere).- Name of our Coy and School must be clearly indicated on the banner itself. (anywhere you want)- No specific theme given, but you can think along the lines of what it means to a guide, relevance to Thinking Day, unity, being prepared etc. Things we do like outdoor cooking, gadget tying, campfires etc are some ideas.- Be creative and think up of catchy & meaningful slogans! Example>> "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it a UFO? NO! It's a FLYING PIG IN A PINK TUTU!" [terms "flying pig" & "pink tutu" inspired by jia-en ma'am xD]Thinking Day is an important day for us guides, as you all know:) Besides being the birthday of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, it's a day where every guide is encouraged to think of other members of the Movement around the world! You can base your design on this as well.
2. Guides Tee Proposal- Deadline: hand in proposals at the start of cca next Friday, 22/1/10.- Criteria- both front and back design
- t-shirt should be collared white tee
- no design on sleeves and at the bottom of the shirt

Sec 2s, there are a few changes to the things I told you all, so read carefully to find out what. I apologise for the late post, you can imagine the horror i felt every time the connection fails. Ugh. Sorry guides!
1) TOTAL DEFENCE PROJECTS — FUN WITH RESEARCH (Group Work)
Objective: To encourage pupils to take an active interest in Total Defence and make it a part of their daily lives.
- In groups of 4, research on and present a project on a Total Defence-related topic.
For example,‘Conserving Our Heritage — What makes up our heritage and what can we do to protect and promote it?’(Psychological Defence); ‘National Service — Looking at its history, origins, significance.’(Military Defence).
- The project can be presented in various forms, such as a drama, slide show, mini-exhibition, scrapbook, song/rap/cheer, etc. Each presentation should take about 15-20 min.
- Your presentation should cover the following key points:
a. What have you learnt about this topic and its related aspect(s) of Total Defence?
b. How can we play a part in it?
2) TOTAL DEFENCE MENU OF ACTIVITIES (Individual)
Objective: To get pupils to go hands-on and be involved in Total Defence.
- You will be given a menu of Total Defence activities to choose to participate in, to be completed in 2 weeks (starting 23/11/09). Different activities on the menu, depending on their difficulty level, will have different points pegged to them. You have to obtain a minimum number of 25 points to pass this activity, and cover at least two aspects of Total Defence in your choice of activities.
**- Hence, it will NOT be done on the spot. The form of submission (e.g. via email, snail mail etc since it will be during cca break) will be further elaborated in future posts, so do keep a look-out!
**- After completing your activities, you are to share the learning points/experiences gained.

Total Defence Bronze [sec 1s]
Hands-on Activity 1- Show & Tell (Individual)•You are to bring an item, or a picture of an item, that is related to Total Defence (e.g. a first-aid kit or an army beret), and make a 1-min presentation on it. •Objective: Enhance understanding of each Total Defence aspect and the part that we can play.
Your presentation should cover the following key points:
1.Which aspect(s) of Total Defence is the item related to? How/ Why?
2.What is the function/purpose of this item?
3.How is it usually used? Where can it usually be found?
4.How can you use this item to enhance our Total Defence capability?
Here are some examples below...
ASPECT~Psychological Defence
POSSIBLE ITEMS•Picture of our National Flag/National Symbols •Picture of our national icons or identifying landmarks (e.g., statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, Merlion, Changi Airport)
ASPECT~Social Defence
POSSIBLE ITEMS
•Items pertaining to the various ethnic groups' cultures, festivals, costumes, food, etc
•Demonstration of another ethnic group's cultural practice e.g. ketupat weaving, henna painting, calligraphy.
ASPECT~Civil Defence
POSSIBLE ITEMS
•Pictures of a fire suit/hydrant/extinguisher/engine
•Red-cross sign
•First-aid kit
•Pictures/articles/brochure on bomb shelters/shelter exercises
ASPECT~Economic Defence
POSSIBLE ITEMS
•Pictures/articles featuring our economic achievements (airport, sea port, financial district, GDP growth, etc)
•Certificate of participation/enrolment in a course to upgrade and improve one's skills/knowledge
•Flyers/brochures publicising courses to improve one's skills/knowledge (e.g., IT/computer course)
ASPECT~Military Defence
POSSIBLE ITEMS
•Parts of an SAF uniform (e.g., a beret, army boots, IPPT badge)
•Pictures/articles pertaining to the SAF (e.g., equipment, technology, manpower, training)
•Picture of a family member, relative or friend who is serving National Service
Hands-on Activity 2 - 4
•Objective: Show how the five aspects of Total Defence work together to strengthen Singapore's defence.
Hands-on Activity 2- Model Building (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, you are construct a model or sculpture that represents Total Defence, say, by using newspapers and stationery items like string, glue and tape.
•When the models are ready, team members are to present their model and explain the concept/ideas behind it.
Hands-on Activity 3- Together As One Body Machine (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, form a 'machine' per group, using their body movements. For example, if the group is representing a cake-mixer, one pupil can be the whisk, another the mixing bowl, and so on.
•Alternatively, you can also 'invent' a new machine.
•Team members are to present their machine and explain the concept/ideas behind it. (3 min)
Hands-on Activity 4- Salad Making (Groupwork)
•In groups of 4-5, bring five different types of vegetables/fruits that can be made into a salad.
•Using the 'salad' illustration as a guide, you are to think of three other analogies that can be used to illustrate the importance of Total Defence.
Right, so sec 1s do take note and bring all the things you need to prepare for the hands-on activities except show and tell for 20/11 guides activity. Form your own groups beforehand.

To clarify on a few of your doubts on hostess badge:1) You DO NOT have to bring drinks, we will be using tapwater to pretend that it's coffee/tea, so just bring your cups etc. Sorry for the wrong info given to some of you. 2) Writing materials may include decorative pens, cutouts from printer, stickers etc, anything that you need to write your card and letter. 3) Hostess badge materials means your table cloth, food, cups, cutleries and so on, if you got confused on what that meant. 4) Like I said the activity before camp, you can refer to books on etiquette or go to google and youtube to search for info and videos on table manners and being a good host etc, if you're still at a loss as to what to do.5) Remember, nothing will be provided for you except the test location, tables and chairs, so bring EVERYTHING you need. Lastly, take note that those who can't make it will not be able to get the badge, as there will not be a retest. That's all then, relax and apply what you know, no need to be super formal, you guys can do it! easy peasy :) -hweefen

Upcoming Hostess Badge for Sec 1s

Hello everyone!
Yup as the title suggests, this post contains all the information you (sec 1s) need to know on what you will have to do to attain the hostess badge - it's the one badge you absolutely can't afford to miss, so read closely!
Purpose of this badge is to show that YOU as a guide can be a qualified good host to others, besides being equipped with skills on table etiquette and such. It's important because you guys will then be able to partake in refreshment duties like the rest of us next year after this, isn't that exciting (think of the good food you'll be able to stuff yourself silly with during clearing up)! :D
Anyway, I apologise for the late post, just got home like not long ago. There are 3 parts in total:
1. Entertain the testers (max 3 guests) at afternoon tea. (5-10min)*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·whether the menu served is appropriate (Guides just need to bring ONE food item suitable for the theme - afternoon tea)
·entertainment factor of the host - greetings, making the guests feel welcome, able to strike conversation with ease with the guests etc[decide and tell testers at the start what kind of guests they are: strangers, family, friends etc]
·body language - etiquette in serving the guests, offering food & drinks etc2. Know, and where possible demonstrate, the chief things to remember when entertaining a guest or guests by laying of table. (5min to prepare)*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·whether the table is properly laid according to the theme afternoon tea (to serve 2-3 guests)
·Guides need to bring their own table cloth, napkin, cutleries, ONE food item to be served, cups, plates, teapot etc3. a) Write an invitation card inviting to a tea party (any theme, e.g. formal, informal, children, adults, animals etc)
*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·creativity & attractiveness of card (according to theme)
·content of card is relevant & detailed (time, venue, dress code etc)
·language use is appropriate & relevant to the mode of guests
3. b) Write a letter refusing an invitation (one to be formal).
*Marks will be awarded as follows:
·format of letter
·content of letter is relevant
·appropriate use of language
All these will be done during activities, so please bring only the materials needed and NOT start doing at home beforehand. However, annual camp is just less than 2 days later, so let's focus on the that first, and you can continue the preparations after that. Thanks alot:D

Duty List for cookie sale
IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE!
- This is the duty list for Thursday & either Friday (if there is school) or Tuesday. If there are sales on Friday, a new duty list will be put up for Tuesday.
- There will be cookie sales after school as well so please follow the upper secondary recess list after school sales as well.
- There will be three different counters.
- Different colored names will mean different duties so take note of your colors.
- The overall i/cs for all the upper secondary recesses will be Deborah and Maggie, thus not stated in the list.
- There will be a short briefing on what you are supposed to do so just take note of your duties. (Wednesday, after school)
- If there is any unhappiness or strong objections (with valid reasons) to the duty rooster, please contact me, Deborah, ASAP so that I can make changes.
- There are some who have to do duties twice as there is a lack of manpower so I seek your understanding & cooperation for that! (Especially Sec threes :D)
- Lastly, please be as enthusiastic as possible & remember to smile!
