You will have to introduce and share the books read through presentation or comic strip or story board to the rest of your patrol members. You may want to bring along a print of the cover page of your book.

East Division Day '10
Hello Guides!
East Division Day is coming yet again! In case the Sec 1s do not know, EDD arrives once every year, and it is the day when all Guides from the east of Singapore schools gather and have fun together. We have various competitions every year and have been winning numerous trophies. Hopefully, we can do the same this year, and more importantly, have fun!
The East Division Day 2010 will be held on 18th September 2010. The details are as follows:
Theme : Igniting the Flame (YOG)
Venue : Bedok View Secondary School
Time : 8.30am - 1.00pm
For dance, healthy snack making, mascot making, gadgets, recycled craft making, poster making and sports jersey design competitions, proposals have to be submitted to Li Fang @ 3L on Wednesday 25/8 at 7.15am. I/Cs to oversee proposal.
Here are the various competitions
. Names highlighted in red are I/Cs.
1. Cheerleading Competition (10 Guides)
- Sec 1s: Grace, Celine, Jia Xin, Gracia, Chi Hui, Hui Juan, Li Qin
- Sec 2s: Natasha, Clara, Lim Min
- Duration of Cheer: A maximum of 2 minutes.
- Theme for the Cheer: "Igniting the Flame".
- Each school can only send in one team to participate.
- Each team must consist of a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 10 members.
- Guides are not allowed to engage in any dangerous acts or stunts.
- All Packs are given a maximum of 30 minutes to compose the Cheers.
- The Cheer is to be submitted at the end of the 3o minutes.
- No props are allowed.
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
2. Dance Competition (10 Guides)- Sec 3s: Valerie, Yee Kay, Megan, Ru Xin, Tsu Hui, Jia Minn, Jia Wen, Felicia, Denise, Selina
- Things to include in proposal: Song titles, duration of dance, costume, budget.
- Each team is to choreograph a dance incorporating elements of hip hop. Teams are encouraged to showcase the vibrancy of youths through their dance.
- Each school is only allowed to send in 1 team
Each participating team should only comprise of 8 to 10 members.
Duration of dance item should be within 3 to 5 minutes.
Costume should not be revealing. - Participating teams are to bring their own CD with the song clearly indicated. Any remix music must be burned into one CD.
3. Healthy Snack Making Competition (2 guides)- Sec 2s: Jessie, Wen Xuan
- Things to include in proposal: 2 ideas for snacks, ingredients/utensils needed, estimated time needed for preparation of snack, budget, receipt, write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.
- Each company is only allowed to send one team.
- Maximum no. of people in each team: 2
- The snack should be relevant to the theme.
- These 3 ingredients must be included in the snack: nuts, fruits and raisins.
- A write-up of the snack together with the breakdown of budget (include receipts) should be submitted.
- Budget for Healthy Snack Making will be capped to $10.
- Preparation of ingredients (for e.g, cutting of ingredients, decorations) should be done within the given 1hr 30 mins and NOT pre-prepared before the start of the competition.
- Usage of gloves and aprons are compulsory in the preparation of the snack. Gloves and aprons will not be provided.
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
4. Mascot Making Competition (3 guides)- Sec 1s: Yuvonne, Yi Hui
- Sec 2s: Fiona
- Things to include in proposal: Ideas, materials needed, budget, time taken, short write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.
- Each company is only allowed to send one team.
- Maximum number of participants per team: 3 girl guides including mascot and presenter.
- The design of the mascot should be relevant to the theme, “Igniting The Flame”.
- Teams will have to bring their own recyclable/environmental friendly materials (plastic bottles/ cans/ newspaper).
- Each team will be given 1 minute to present and explain the relevance of the theme to their item.
- The mascot making competition will be judged on congruence with theme, originality and creativity of the design, attractiveness, suitability of materials and oral presentation.
- Time frame: 45 min
5. Gadgets (8 Guides)
1st Team
- Sec 2s: Shirylnn, Alyssa
- Sec 3s: Cui Wen, Li Fang
2nd Team:- Sec 2s: Vivian, Jia Ying
- Sec 3s: Angelina, Jia Ying
- Things to include in proposal: Ideas for gadgets, no. of poles needed, estimated time needed for completion of gadgets, short write-up describing gadgets, explaining design and relevance to theme.
- Each school can send in a maximum of 2 teams.
- Each team must comprise of not more than 4 guides.
- Each team to create a gadget that can be used for outdoor activity, in line with the theme, “Igniting the flame”.
- Each team must provide their own twine, poles and scissors.
- The maximum number of poles (both short and long ones) used should not be more than 20.
- Failure to comply with the rules and regulations will result in disqualification.
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
6. Recycled Craft Making Competition (4 Guides)- Sec 1s: Pei Yi, Pearlyn
- Sec 2s: Ally, Yue Xin
- Things to include in proposal: Ideas for trophy, recycled materials used, materials needed, estimated time needed for craft making, short write-up explaining design and relevance to theme.
- Each company is allowed to send in ONLY one team
- 4 members per team
- Each team is to design and create a replica of a winning TROPHY
- The design of the trophy should reflect the theme “Igniting the Flame”
- Each product MUST consist of AT LEAST 3 different type of recycled materials (eg: plastic, paper, aluminum). However, teams are ENCOURAGED to use as many recycled materials as possible
- Other materials/decorative items (recycled or non recyclable) (eg; ribbons, poster color, glue, strings) is up to the discretion of team members
- The final product MUST be accompanied with a brief 50-words write-up explaining the design and its relevance to the theme
- The write-up can be of any form and it must be placed next to the trophy for the judges’ reference
- Teams will have to bring their own materials
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
7. Poster Making Competition (1 Guide)- Sec 2: Pei Xuan
- Things to include in proposal: Drawing of ideas of poster designs.
- Each company may send in only ONE team.
- Participants will create a poster according to the theme on an A3 sized drawing block. • Participants must create their poster on the day itself so there should NOT be any markings of design on the drawing block before the competition starts. (The organizers will go round to check before the start of the competition)
- Please bring your own materials such as drawing block, colour pencils, crayon or any other colouring materials.
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
8. Sports Jersey Design Competition: Non-winning (3 Guides)- Sec 2s: Hui Ling, Sue Fang, Jeanne
- Things to include in proposal: Drawings of ideas of designs, budget.
- T-shirt design should be based on the theme, “Igniting the Flame”.
- The t-shirt design is meant as a cheerleading uniform.
- Each school is only allowed to send in 1 team.
- Maximum number of Guides per team: 3.
- Teams will have to bring their own design materials.
- Each team will also have to bring one plain white t-shirt of any type before the competition e.g. round neck, polo tee, etc.
- There should not be any markings of design on the shirt before the competition starts. (The organizers will go round to check before the start of the competition)
- Teams need to include the design of the trefoil on the T-shirt.
- Design should be limited to the front of the t-shirt only.
- Number of colours used on the T-shirt is not restricted.
- The t-shirt design will be judged on its relevance to the theme, originality and creativity of the design, practicality to be worn in public and effort. So unleash your creativity!
- Since we will be organising this event, we will not be winning this, to show that we put up a good fight.
- Time frame: 1 h 30 min
Those not participating will be on rotational shifts with the organising of the sports jersey design competition. Additional details to your proposal are entirely welcomed :D

- Construct a model or sculpture that it feels best represents Total Defence, using recycled materials.

a short presentation to explain the concept/ideas behind it.
Clause 2 (individual): Show and Tell
- Bring
an item or picture of an item that pertains to an aspect of Total Defence (military, civil, economic, social, psychological) and do
a short presentation on it.
- Your presentation should cover the following key points:
1. Which aspect(s) of Total Defence is the item related to? How? Why?
2. What is the function/purpose and importance of this item?
3. How is it usually used? Where can it usually be found?
4. How can you use this item to enhance understanding of Total Defence?
- Examples:
1. Military Defence - pictures/ articles on keeping fit
2. Civil Defence - First Aid Kit
3. Economic Defence - energy-efficient light bulb
4. Social Defence - photos of multi-racial groups mixing together

- Prepare beforehand on what you are going to do.
- Bring
salad ingredients (e.g. cabbage, carrots, fruits, sauce, etc),
utensils (knife, small chopping board, place to show salad e.g. lunchbox/plate/bowl).
- 20 minutes to prepare your salad in the canteen.

Duty Roster for Cookie Sale
Hello Guides,
As you know we are having our Cookie Sale now. Other than taking individual orders, we will also be setting up a booth in the concourse on
Monday and Tuesday recesses. Also,
before morning assembly, each guide will have to go to their assigned classes to make an announcement to collect cookie orders from that class.

For the recess booth duty, there will be a separate form given to you. Please approach Julia for Monday's lower sec recess, Natasha for Tuesday's lower sec Recess and Yee Kay/Megan for upper sec recess for both days to get the order form. Forms have to be returned to them by end of recess.
Also, please carry one table and one bench from the canteen at the start of the first recess and leave it there for the 2nd recess. Play the cookie game while waiting for potential customers.

Duty Roster for Cookie Sale
Hello Guides,
As you know we are having our Cookie Sale now. Other than taking individual orders, we will also be setting up a booth in the concourse on
Monday and Tuesday recesses. Also,
before morning assembly, each guide will have to go to their assigned classes to make an announcement to collect cookie orders from that class.

For the recess booth duty, there will be a separate form given to you. Please approach Julia for Monday's lower sec recess, Natasha for Tuesday's lower sec Recess and Yee Kay/Megan for upper sec recess for both days to get the order form. Forms have to be returned to them by end of recess.
Also, please carry one table and one bench from the canteen at the start of the first recess and leave it there for the 2nd recess. Play the cookie game while waiting for potential customers.
