Annual camp '12 Reflections
Tanya, Sec 2
Annual Camp was an enriching experience and was also my first time camping at Camp Christine so everything was rather new and a first-time experience for me. As expected, Camp Christine was really muddy and my shoes got muddy real quick. At first I was pretty grossed out by the mud on my shoes but got used to it soon.
Regarding our performance during the camp, I feel that it was not up to standard overall as we did not perform well for the first two days. When we just reached Camp Christine and had luggage inspection, we were really slow and asked for time extensions for both times. I feel that this activity (luggage inspection) could have been done better as the Sec 3 ma'ams already gave us an incentive to do better so that we do not have to do a third round of inspection but we failed to unpack and pack our luggage before the time was up and had to ask for a time extension. Also, for the subsequent activities we did not meet the time given and had to ask for time extensions, which was pretty disappointing as the timings the Sec 3 ma'ams gave us were reasonable and were much more than what we were given by the ma'ams in Annual Camp 2011 last year. Even on several occasions we did not ask for time extensions as we forgot to check the time and asked for a time extension after the time had exceeded which is pointless.
However, towards the end of the camp I feel that everyone worked much harder and also had a better sense of urgency and for every activity on Day 3 except for changing parade. We were actually early for a few activities for more than a minute.
All in all, I feel that Annual Camp was not as tiring as I had expected, it being at Camp Christine and all, but I feel that I was not as tired as I felt last year after Annual Camp last year although it was held in school. I learnt many new things through this camp, I also learnt how to lead my juniors better and also built stronger bonds between my fellow batch mates.
Li Ying, sec 2
Overall,
this camp was both a difficult and meaningful one. As a patrol, batch, and
company, we met with manu difficulties along the way, but managed to solve it
together. On the first day, we had to tie all our gadgets. Out of all the
patrols, only my patrol’s luggage rack could not stand. We tried to re-tie some
of the poles but it did not work. When we went to carry out our activities,
some of our sec3 ma’ams were very helpful and offered to help us re-tie.
However, when we went back to our tent, the luggage rack collapsed again. We
then found out that the problem is with the melloting and we tried to mallot it
deeper. We were very happy when it finally stand. I would like to thank Celine
as she was very helpful in helping us with our collapsed luggage rack and
throughout the camp. Even though she was injured, she always helped me and my
patrol when we were facing problems. It was like whenever we were the last few
to take our things from our tent, she was always there to help and not just
rush us. I am really thankful to her. She deserved the “most helpful guide”
award. When we thought that our problems were all gone, we found out that there
was an ant nest at the back of our tent. However, this problem was quickly
solved as we went to the other patrol’s tents to sleep. I am grateful to
Nacreous as they took in 3 of us during the second night without much complaints
and were very helpful, especially Celine. She helped me take things from the
tent while I was in the toilet.
Here, I
would sincerely like to thank Jing Xuan ma’am, Gracia ma’am and Grace ma’am, as
they were very concern about me and the others throughout the whole camp. On
the second night, I had a bad stomachache, which I assume was Gastric. Although
it was already around 3am in the morning, Chi Hui ma’am and a few other ma’ams
still went to the trouble of cooking a cup of hot milo and giving me some biscuits
to eat. Jing Xuan ma’am, Gracia ma’am, Yi Hui ma’am and Celine ma’am even kept
me company and talked to me although I know that they were really very sleepy.
I felt quite bad as they could not sleep because they did not want to leave me
alone. I must say that they were indeed very funny and sort of helped to cure
my stomachache. :D I truly feel thankful to them for their care and concern.
For our
patrol item, the disc that I burned the songs into could not work as it was a
DVD CD. I was very worried as without the songs, our patrol item would not be
able to proceed smoothly and everything would be ruined. I would like to thank
Li Qin ma’am. Instead of scolding us, she very patiently helped to think of all
ways to retrieve the song, and helped to liven up the heavy mood. Because of
her, we managed to proceed with our patrol item successfully.
I am very
happy that our batch item managed to carry out quite successfully as most of
the things were quite made up on-the-spot. I must say that Francesca is a very
good mc/actor. She could make up all sorts of things, for example the technical
problem thing. As my role was copycat, I had to copy whatever the mc and my
opponent said. Therefore, when Francesca started saying a super long sentence,
I was like freaking out and asking her to stop. It was really funny xD.
Thankfully I managed to catch what she said and repeat like a recorder haha :D
I would
like to thank the Guiders for their care during the past 3D2N camp and I learnt
a lot from them too. Thank you to the seniors for all your effort that you put
in to plan this camp for the whole company. A BIG thank you! ^^ <3 font="font">3>
Francesca, Sec 2
Before camp, we, nacreous, had to meet almost everyday of weeks to complete our flag, patrol identity and item. It was definitely a challenge to get everyone together as many had their own plans already. For nacreous, we didn't have any disputes before, hence camp was not that hard. I felt like we had a good teamwork during camp and through that we had build stronger bonds between each other. Everyone definitely played an important row during camp, and I believe without one another we wouldn't stand. For nacreous, everyone waited for one another and helped each other, in eating or maybe just carrying something. We might not be the most outstanding or enthusiastic patrol, however, we are definitely the most united patrol:D
Christy, Sec 1
Before the camp, my patrol and I (Celine Ma’am,
Pearlyn Ma’am, Hui Juan Ma’am, Kalista, Adeline, Rexanne, Yee Shuen, Aindrae
& Yin Shyn) had a few meet-up dates whereby we discussed proposals,
practiced for patrol item and did our patrol identities and flag. However there
were time clashes thus not being able to do them as a whole patrol together.
During the times we met up, sec2s gave us advices on what to prepare and expect
for the camp. I myself felt scared for the camp as it would be the first time
camping as a Guide and I was afraid I would be under-prepared. Time past fast
and very soon it was the day of the camp.
The three days passed by in a blur as well, for some
activities time seemed to drag, but more often than not, time passed very
quickly. Activities done there included tent pitching, gadget tying, bathing and
changing parade, clean up, luggage inspection, indoor cooking, campfire and not
missing out the outdoor adventure at Sarimbun.
Tent pitching, campfire and the outdoor adventure at
Sarimbun were a first and it was very interesting. However pitching the tent
had been tiring due to the weight of the poles and tent itself but there was a
sense of accomplishment felt; after we set it up and the fact that it lasted us
for 3 days 2 nights, even through the constant heavy rain.
I think as a whole, our time spent on each activity
could be reduced, but I think day by day, we all learnt to have a better sense
of urgency and quicken our movements. Our volume was also much better than on a
normal CCA activity. Relationships were further developed and bonds between us
were stronger thus teamwork was well-displayed.
Overall the whole camp was exhausting; no doubt almost
everyone was happy to go home on the third day. However this camp had also been
a fruitful one, learning new stuff, gaining more insights and knowing each
other better. It is really my honour to be in Sprite; I really enjoyed time
spent when smiles and laughter were exchanged, constant encouragement and advice
given during the tough times, and of course the joking after a tiring day back
in the tent. I am very lucky to be in Sprite patrol, it was a patrol where we
worked hard together and yet have fun on top of the care of our sec3 Ma’ams. It
was fun while it lasted, and I am pretty sure Annual Camp 2012 in Camp
Christine would be ingrained in my head.
Alyssia, Sec 1
My patrol prepared for annual camp by meeting to discuss our patrol item and to do the patrol identities. I was actually quite nervous for the camp because it was something new to me. Although it was exhausting throughout the camp, it is actually rather meaningful as I was able to learn new things such as pitching a tent. I was also able to bond with my patrol mates.
On the first day, we did luggage inspection and learnt to pitch a tent. It was new and interesting to me. We also did gadget tying. Overall, we could have done better if we had taken less time to get to places.
On the second day, we went to Serambun Camp. We played Splish Splash, Challenge Valley and Low Elements, where we learnt how to work better as a team. Overall, we improved from the previous day's performance, however we could have been faster.
I bonded a lot with my batch mates and patrol mates during the camp. In short, it was a meaningful camp and I learnt many new things.

You have to report at our booth 15 minutes before your actual shift starts in FULL GUIDES UNIFORM.
All Guides have to either stay near/at the booth and present to parents/primary 6 students about what we do in Guides etc; or go around inviting parents/primary 6 to visit our booth (attract them by giving them souvenirs-can explain what the structure is, what the two flags represent, etc). While bringing visitors over to our booth, Guides have to provide them with a brief introduction of our school and Guides.
Do remember to bring some money along so you can go to the canteen and buy food, as lunch is not provided.
Remember to be friendly, courteous and neat at all times. Do your best for Open House, and let the parents and fellow juniors have a great impression of AHS and of Guides!

Reflections for Annual Hike '12
Qi Rou, Sec 2, Orchid Patrol
On 30th October 2012, we
had our annual hike. We started at the esplanade and proceeded to hike all
around the City Hall area. We were only equipped with a compass and a map, and
had to orienteer our way around. Unfortunately, my combined patrol only manages
to complete two stations. This was due to the fact that we kept on reading the
directions on the map wrongly and overshooting our destinations. We also had
quite sufficient time to look for the last destination but failed to locate it
due to us not being able to read the map properly, despite the fact that we
could refer to local maps. I also did not give the Sec 1s much chance to
orienteer. Another reason that we could not complete the hike well was probably
because we walked a lot of times. Even though we tried to run, we still gave up
to our fatigue along some of the way and ended up brisk walking, which wasted a
lot of time. I think that we should have a better sense of urgency and run
more. I think that this was a very disappointing hike as we only managed to
complete two stations. I also think that we should endure more and continue
running even if we feel tired. This way, we might have been able to complete
more stations. I wish that I had been more urgent persevering. I hope that I
can do better if I have the chance to so that we can prove we can do it.
Adeline, Sec 2, Hibiscus Patrol
I felt that I could have done better for annual hike as my patrol spent quite a long time trying to get to the first station. If we were able to read the map better, we would have saved a lot of time and that way we might have been able to complete our hike. However, because we wandered around a lot trying to find the first station, we managed to familiarize ourselves with the area so we were able to get to the other stations a lot faster. I think I could have put in more effort for this hike because it was difficult for me to run at a certain point of the hike because I got a headache then which caused me to lag while running. I'm grateful to Kalista who helped me carry some of my stuff when I found it difficult to keep running and also to the seniors who kindly bought us green tea towards the end of the hike which refreshed us greatly. Overall, I think I did average for this hike and I definitely could have done better.
Jaslyn, Sec 1, Flowerpecker Patrol
The annual hike was a new experience for us, the sec1s. I was in peckrow patrol. At the start of the hike, it was abit messy and confusing as we could not find our way to the locations. I felt that it was a little tiring as we had to run around. But soon , we managed to find the location using the items given. After finding the first location, the second location was easy to find as we found it quite quickly. we were elated! We worked together and we found the third location. At last, we had no time and we had to go back to esplanade. we were all tired and exhausted. Though Our patrol did not manage to finish all the stations given, it was a great experience afterall!

Reflections for East Division Day
Yun Yee, Sec 2, Hibiscus Patrol
Guides East Division Day was a very memorable experience for me as a secondary two. All the Girl Guides from various schools in the east gathered together to commemorate East Division Day at Bedok View secondary and one can expect it to be filled with energetic girls ready to complete their mission!
Anyway when we walked towards the hall, we proceded with the opening ceremony and everyone was very excited. Girl guides got ready for the competitions by dressing up, and also practicing some moves for dance. For me, I took part in the cheerleading competition. And much to our surprise, we won the first place! We cheer ed for other schools too, after completing the cheers. In preparation for the cheers, we met up frequently to recite and also practice the moves. We also seeked advice from the secondary 3 seniors in order to perfect the whole things and make it look awesome, hence our winning first place also has the contributions of the teachers and the seniors! The other competitions were also held very successfully with the guides doing their best in everything!
It was overall a very fun and exciting experience. Everybody did their best and regardless of the outcomes of the competitions, we had a lot of fun!
Kristie, Sec 2, Dove Patrol
This year's EDD was a special one to me as I did not participate in anything last year. Despite the fact that my job was just to help out in the guides booth, I had learnt a few things there. Before EDD, our seniors have asked us to design some badges and bags. If they are very nice, it would be chosen as one of the designs that we are going to make. I had designed various designs of badges and bags. However, I did not think that they are very nice as my art was always very bad since young. Also before EDD, our seniors had given us some badges and bags that they had made and designed earlier on and asked us which of those would we chose if we were the customers. I had given my opinions of which badges should be mass produced and the prices should be less costly as most of the customers would either be brownies or guides and would not be able to afford things that are too expensive.
On the day of EDD, I have play a part by bringing some things from the hall to our booth which is located in between the linkway of two school blocks. At our booth, I have made badges and did some promotions to promte our badges and bags. From this year's EDD, I have learnt how to make badges using the machine. Also, I learnt how to attend to customers and understand that sincerity is important in trying to convince the customer to buy our goods.
To me, this year's EDD is actually quite fun and meaningful as we can bond our relationship with the other schools' guides while taking part in competitions at the same time. I learnt many things like operating the stamp machine and many more. I am really looking forward to the next year's EDD.
Zhi Wei, Sec 1, Dove Patrol
For East Division Day, I was involved in the Healthy Snack Making competition. Basically, me and my other group mates, Christy and Qi Rou, had to come up with a dish that matched with the theme which was 'Empowering Girls' and was healthy. Our first proposal got rejected but we finally decided to make a 'homemade tomato sauce spaghetti' and salad which contained a lot of healthy ingredients such as onions, carrots, lettuce and of course, tomatoes. Before the competition, all three of us tried to make the dish and overall I think we did rather well and we were well prepared. We each divided our work equally. Christy and I had to cut up the ingredients while Qi Rou stir-fried them and made the salad. When we tasted it, I think that it tasted quite good. I think that our preparation went smoothly as we did not have any arguments at all and we worked well together. On the day of the competition, I was feeling quite excited as I felt confident that our dish was going to taste nice. When we started cooking, I felt that we were very well-coordinated as we had allocated our roles before the start of the competition. I started of by cutting the ingredients up with Christy and Qi Rou was making the salad. Half way through, I saw that most of the other competitors made small snacks like sandwiches and I thought that it looked quite delicious. When we were done with cooking, we arranged our dish on the place mat nicely with a glass of water and flowers. I think that the end result was up to my expectations as it was very fragrant and looked very delicious too. The other competitors who were done had arranged their dishes very nicely as well. Some even wore bananas and held banana leaves as part of their presentation which I thought was very creative. When the judges tasted our dish, I felt a little bit nervous. However, when the judges tasted our food, their expressions did not give away how they felt of the dish. We cleared up and had to stay behind to unclog the sink because us Guides and Brownies did not clear their plates before washing them. When we were done, we went up to the hall just in time for the prize giving ceremony. I felt nervous when they were about to read out the winners. However, our school did not win. But I still think the overall experience was extremely enjoyable and I learnt a lot of new skills from there. I learnt how to cook better, learnt how to cooperate with my teammates and learnt how important teamwork was from this competition. I felt like we did try our best and put in all our efforts when cooking. This is something I would like to try again next year. (:
Yin Shyn, Sec 1, Sparrow Patrol
It’s the first year that I went for such a competition
that involved the whole cca. I was in the choral/singing competition, since I
have never sung in front of a large crowd before, I was quite nervous. Then
since, I was also involved iin the Mid autumn singing contest, I decided that
this was a good experience to practice singing. For the next few days in the
week after we were notified of which competition we were in, the whole group met
during mental and lunch break on different days to decide who sings which part
and practice singing as a group. We had to change the parts a few times before
we decided on how the whole thing was going to be like. Then during cca, we had
to perform in front of everybody for the first time. Everything went quite
smoothly after that and the whole group inmproved a lot in chemistry.
On the day of the competition we were informed that
there was a high chance that we will be the first ones to sing, since Anglican
High’s name started with the letter a and we were the only school in the east
zone that had that letter. However, luckily thhe order of singing was according
to how we were seated in the room. We listened to the other groups sing and as
it came closer to our turn, we all got butterflies in our stomachs. After performing, we were all asked to wait
outside while the judges discussed who won the competition. We emerged third
from the competiton, while cheerleading and fashion show emerged champion, and
I was so elated to hear that. After that, we did a company cheer and took
photos. It was truly and wonderful experience and I can’t wait for next year’s
EDD to arrive.

Campfire / Grace Song lyrics
Hi Guides, here are the lyrics for the campfire songs/grace.
Campfire songs:
Jamaican Farewell
Down the way where the nights are
gay
And the sun shines daily on the
mountain top
I took a trip on the sailing ship
And when I reached Jamaica I made a
stop
But I’m sad to say, I’m on my way
Won’t be back for many a day
My heart is down, my head is turning around
I had to leave a little girl in Kingston town
Sounds of laughter everywhere
And the dancing girls swaying to
and fro
I must declare my heart is there
Though I have been from Maine to
Mexico
Chorus
Linger
Hmm… I want to linger here
Hmm… A little longer here
Hmm… A little longer here with you
Hmm… It’s such a perfect night
Hmm… It doesn’t seem quite right
Hmm…This is our last night here
with you
Hmm… And come September
Hmm… I will remember
Hmm… Our camping days and
friendship true
Hmm… And as the years go by
Hmm… I think of you and sigh
Hmm… It’s just goodnight and not
goodbye
Manito:
I love my Manito yes I do (x3)
I love my Manito but I won’t tell who!
I’ve got a feeling warm and gay
As she cast her eyes my way
I’ll reveal her name one day
But who she is I will not say
I love my Manito yes I do (x3)
I love my Manito but I won’t tell who!

Knew the ship will never land
They were sad when the big ship went down
Oh they were sad (SO SAD) x2
Oh they were sad when the big ship went down
To the bottom where the husbands and wives
And the children lost their lives
They were sad when the big ship went down

Scrapbook for Annual Hike
Hi Guides.
Below is the information regarding the four festivals that you are supposed to include in your scrapbook which will be done in the combined patrols.
Since the hike was not completed by all the patrols, you do not need to include the places that were not visited. More information should be added on and try to be creative as possible.
We hope that your scrapbooks will be of an excellent standard including your honest reflections about your performance during the hike. Do note that every guide is required to do a reflection.
Deadline: Friday, 9th November 2012
Please put in your best efforts and work hard. I know that you all can do it.

Chinese Chinese- Ren Ri (The Human Day)
Renri refers specially to the 7th day of zhengyue, the first month in the Chinese calendar. According to Chinese customs, renri was the day human beings were created. According to Chinese genesis, the goddess with snake body (2852-2738 B.C.) created chicken on the first day of the first lunar month, dog on the 2nd day, sheep on the 3rd day, pig on the 4th day, cow on the 5th day, horse on the 6th and human on the 7th day.
The goddess made many human using mud mixed by yellow soil and water. Also she taught human about the marriage so that humans can reproduce themselves. Therefore, the 7th lunar day of the year becomes the human's birthday.
Most people just eat pettitoes with angel hair noodle. The long noodle stands for longevity and raw fish for success. Once, Chinese ate seven vegetables (celery, shepherd's purse spinach, green onion, garlic, mugwort and colewort) on the human day, which can repel the evil spirits and sickness away.
People also eat Yu Shen on this day. Yu means ‘fish’ but when pronounced it can also sound like ‘extra’ . Shen does not only mean ‘raw’ but also ‘life’. So essentially who eats raw fish on Yan Yat also lives longer.
Indian
Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai , which is around January/February.
The word Thaipusam is a combination of the name of the month, Thai, and the name of a star, Pusam, which is at its highest point during the festival.
A major feature of Thaipusam celebrations is body piercing with hooks, skewers and small lances called 'vel'. Many of these devotees even pull chariots and heavy objects with hooks attached to their bodies. Many others pierce their tongue and cheek to impede speech and thereby attain full concentration on the Lord. Most devotees enter into a trance during such piercing due to the incessant drumming and chanting of "vel vel shakti vel."
On the day of the festival, they will shave their heads and undertake a pilgrimage along a set route while engaging in various acts of devotion, carrying various types of burdens, known to them a kavadi. At its simplest this may entail carrying a pot of milk, but they also pay back their sins by physical hurt, such as piercing the skin, tongue or cheeks with vel skewers.
The spear pierced through his tongue or cheeks reminds one constantly of Lord Murugan. It also prevents one from speaking and gives great power of endurance. In Singapore, the Thaipusam ceremony starts in the early hours of the morning where devotees fulfill their vows with a 4.5 km walk from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple along Serangoon Road to Sri Thendayuthapani Temple on Tank Road. They usually carry milk pots and wooden Kavadis (consists of two semicircular pieces of wood or steel which are attached to a cross structure that can be balanced on the shoulders of a devotee.) The festival is not just an exclusively Indian affair; several Chinese devotees and people of other races also come to fulfill their vows on this day.
Thaipusam, this sacred ritual, is definitely a true act of faith.

Islamic(Muslim) New Year
The Hijra New Year, also known as Islamic new year (Arabic: رأس السنة الهجرية Ras as-Sanah al-Hijriyah) is the day that marksthe beginning of a newIslamic calendar year, and is the day on which the year count is incremented. The first day of the year is observed on the first day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
Since the Islamic year is eleven to twelve days shorter than the Gregorian year, the Islamic new year does not come on the same day of the Gregorian calendar every year. While some Islamic organisations prefer determining the new month (and hence the new year) by local sightings of the moon,[1] most Islamic institutions and countries, including Saudi Arabia[2], follow astronomical calculations to determine future dates of the Islamic calendar.
There are various schema for calculating the tabular Islamic calendar (i.e. not based on observation), which results in differences of typically one or even two days between countries using such schema and those that use lunar sightings. For example, theThe Umm al-Qura Calendar used in Saudi Arabiawas reformed several times in recent years. The current scheme has been introduced in AH 1423 (15 March 2002).[3]
A day in the Islamic calendar is defined as beginning at sunset. For example, 1 Muharram 1432 was defined to correspond to 7 or 8 December 2010 in official calendars (depending on the country). For an observation-based calendar, a sighting of the New Moon at sunset of 6 December would mean that 1 Muharram lasted from the moment of sunset of 6 December to the moment of sunset of 7 December, while in places where the New Moon was not sighted on 6 December, 1 Muharram would last from the moment of sunset of 7 December to the moment of sunset of 8 December. Maal Hijrah, which is also called Awal Muharram, is an important day for muslim. It falls on the first day of Muharram on every Muslim calender year, which is the first day on muslim calender.
The meaning of Maal Hijrah in English is migration. On this day, Muslim remember Nabi Muhammad S.A.W migrate from Mekkah to Madinah on the year 622 A.D. Besides, Maal Hijrah also mean changes from bad to good side and can be said as starting point and evaluate inner-self on self achievement.
Awal means begining in English and Muharram is the first month of muslim calender. In another words, this is the first day in Muslim calendar. Therefore, this is also the new year for all Muslim.
This day has became an important religious day for all muslim. All the mosque will have solat sunat.

EURASIAN
Eurasian Festival - Halloween
Straddling the line between fall and winter, plenty and paucity, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. Halloween is an example of a Eurasian festival and a yearly holiday observed around the world on October 31, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows. Although Halloween isn't celebrated as lavishly as it is in the US, Halloween is making an upsurge in Italy, and is celebrated there and in the UK, Ireland, and France.
Most scholars believe that it was originally influenced by western European harvest festivals and festivals of the dead while others believe that it originated independently of Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. It is also thought to have been influenced by the Christian holy days of All Saints’ Day. It was traditionally believed that the souls of the dead wandered Earth until All Saints' Day, and Halloween gave them one last chance to get vengeance on their enemies before moving onto the next world. It is thought that, to avoid being recognized by a soul, people would wear masks and costumes to disguise themselves. They would also light bonfires to ward off roaming ghosts.
Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.The night before Halloween people went door to door begging for food (or soul cakes) to feed the poor. Of course, things were tweaked a bit during the time between then and now, the excellent Trick or Treat! In a number of countries around the world, as the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats.
Typical festive Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

But the lord of mighty hands
Knew the ship will never land
They were sad when the big ship went down
Oh they were sad (SO SAD) x2
Oh they were sad when the big ship went down
To the bottom where the husbands and wives
And the children lost their lives
They were sad when the big ship went down
New friend found

Have I kept my honour bright?
Can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared
