Reflections by Guides for Guides Jamboree '12(30/6)

Gracia, Sec3, Kingfisher Patrol

Guides jamboree was on the 30th of June and there's only one word to describe it: FUN.
So in the morning we started off with Tie-and-dye. I was one of the ICs at that station with my fellow batchmates while the rest went to snowcity/rollerblading. At first we were a litle upset that we could not visit snow city as we were ICs of a booth but it was actually really fun! Mdm Faaz, the teacher incharge of that station, was really patient and funny. She taught us the basics of Tie-and-dye, like the Tornado Twist and more. After teaching us the basics, she sent us off to the individual tables to teach the other guides. It was really simple actually and not as complex as I though it would be. As we taught the guides, we managed to make many new friends! I was incharge of teaching two guides and We chatted with them as the tied and dyed their cloths and found out that they were secondary ones from Manjusri Secondary. The designs came out really nice and pretty.

After the am shift, we had.... *drumroll*.... LUNCH! I was rather hungry and lunch was delicious heehee so yeah :)

After lunch, Esther and I were posted to outdoor cooking! We learnt how to make orange muffins! But these are not your ordinary muffins, they are baked in oranges! Yum!

So we halved the oranges, and ate the orange flesh (because Guides are not supposed to waste food). We found out that Changkat Secondary actually grew the oranges themselves and the oranges were rather sweet! I was impressed. We used the instant mix for the muffins and I was a little disappointed because I thought we were really going to mix the flour and eggs... But never mind, the instant mix was cool! It was a mixed berry flavour and we only needed to add some water. We poured the mix into the orange halves and wrapped them up with aluminium foil. Then, we created a fire with solid fuel, placed a wire mesh over the fire and started cooking our oranges. The oranges caught on fire and there were holes in the oranges as well.. So several of the orange halves were leaking and on fire. Oops. The guide assisting us was from Manjusri Secondary as well! Outdoor cooking was actually the station that they were in charge of. So we made alot of new friends from Manjusri Secondary and they are really nice people! :)

The muffins took about 20 minutes to cook and the end product was surprisingly delicious though a little wet! We greedily ate them up.

Outdoor cooking was finished and I still had a little time to spend so I went back up to the Tie and dye booth to help out. Wow! The booth was really crowded and Mdm Faaz was happy to have another pair of hands to help out. She posted me to teach some guides from TKGS how to tie and dye the cloth and everything. As I was teaching them how to tie the cloth, I actually managed to make three different designs. Yay! Mdm Faaz was really thankful to have us at her booth helping out. :)

We cleared up after we were done and so, the Guides Jamboree came to an end... It was an extremely enjoyable and unforgettable experience! :)

Overall, Guides Jamboree was a day well spent as we had the opportunity to try on many activities, ranging from sports to a trip to snow city.
Alongside with Grace, Pei Yi, Li Qin ,we went for a roller blading course, in Bedok South Secondary School and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as the roller blading instructors were commendably patient with us and taught us the basics of roller blading .We were also given several safety gears and equipment such as the safety helmets, knee/elbow guards, etc. After a while, we had gotten a hang of roller blading and were skating effortlessly in the indoor sports hall. Thereafter, we were then engaged in a game (ice and water) with the Chung Cheng High guides and pitted our roller blading skills against them as we maneuvered around the vicinity of the sports hall, trying to `catch` them . Through this short game, we understand the importance of cooperation as we had got to work and communicate well between ourselves in order to emerge victory. It is indeed delighting to be able to be able to pick up such a skill and yet have fun at the same time. The course lasted for two hours or so and we then returned back to Changkat Changi Secondary School where we had our lunch.
After lunch, I went on to participate in the Javelin program but was slightly dismayed as we were not given the spear used in Javelin games but was instead given a rubbery plastic stick. Furthermore, the event was held in the school hall and the space was rather limited. Nevertheless, I was taught on the standing posture as well as the appropriate throwing techniques.
All in all, the entire event was very enriching and fulfilling as I had managed to pick up several skills that may come in use in the near future.

When we first reached there, we assembled in the parade square where attendance was taken. After a while, we proceeded to Snow City. I was very excited as i had not gone to Snow City before and I have not experienced winter before too so I wanted to feel how cold will it be. When we first went ino Snow City, it was not that cold, like an air-conditioned room only. However, when we went to play the slide, it somehow got colder and colder. By the time I finished sliding down, I was freezing and I couldn't really breathe properly. Then, we went on to play with the snow, which made me almost freezento death when my batchmates threw snow into my body. As we were too cold, we then went out to get some warm air. That was the only time I appreciated the warm weather in Singapore. After that, we went in to play the slides again for a few times, and it was very fun and thrilling, especially when we slide down as a batch. After the sesssion had ended, we then went out. By that time, I was freezing like mad and my whole body was numb and my ears were painful. Then, we went back to Changkat Changi Secondary School, where we had a very yummy lunch. After lunch, we started to play the indoor games. First, we played handball. It was really fun and thrilling, especially when we had a match. We also had awesome handball players teaching us how to play and they were very friendly and funny. At the end, we won the match but that does not really matter. What matters is that we gained a lot of experience when we played handball for the first time. It was a very fun sport and we can sweat and exercise in an enjoyable way. After that, we went on to play javeline. We were taught how to throw a javeline and we had some practice before we had a competition. Although we did not win the competition, we already had a great sense of accomplishment as we had learnt a new sport again, and it was very fun too. Before we went back to assemble, we also went to the rock-climbing station. Some of my batchmates were brave enough to rock-climb, but as I was afraid of heights, I did not dare to rock-climb. After that, we assembled in the parade square where the teacher-in-charge of the event gave a short thank-you speech and we were dismissed. All in all, it was indeed a fufilling and super fun day(: From the Guides Jamboree, we also learnt and experienced many new things, and we all had an enjoyable time and experience. I hope that I will be able to participate in such events in the future again(: I LOVE GUIDES JAMBOREE! ;D

I felt that the guides jamboree was very fun. I had went to snow city for the outdoor activity. I had went down the enormous slide several times, one time as a whole company, then as a batch and then with my friends. It was very exciting. I did floorball and weaving for the indoor activity. I had learnt how to weave and how to properly play floorball. I had also made new friends from other schools. I felt that during guides jamboree, we had bonded more and learnt more new things. I hope to attend another guides jamboree.

I think that the Guides Jamboree was really fun and made two new friends, Yunice from Bedok South and Hanis from TKGS. I also managed to meet up with my friends from my ex-primary school and we had a lot of fun. I enjoyed the trip to Snow-City as it was my first time visiting there. Although there wasn't much to play except sliding down the slope, it was a great opportunity to bong with my batch-mate and play in the snow. I even got to know what it is like to live in an Igloo!

The rock-climbing was very fun. Although I was scared of heights, I managed to climb almost to the top so it was a sense of accomplishment rather than not to attempt it. I enjoy climbing the shorter wall as it was much easier to climb. I think rock-climbing is an activity that we need to use our brains to think of the route to reach to the top and our hands and our legs to get there.

Overall, I enjoyed the Guides Jamboree, and the Nasi-lemak was nice too! :)
